Review: American Heart Association Grill It ,Braise It, Broil It

This book from the American Heart Association includes twelve easy techniques to help you make healthy meals. Besides grilling, braising, and broiling there are recipes for slow cooking, microwaving. blending, stir-frying, stewing, steaming, poaching and baking. Also included are resources for a heart-healthy pantry, cooking equipment and tools basics, kitchen and food safety basics, food groups and suggested servings, and more information about the recipes. There is information about shopping smart and eating well, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Nutritional information is included for every recipe. There is a small section with a few colored photos of some of the finished dishes. I decided to make an entire meal from this book. My main course comes from the broiling chapter, sirloin steak with creamy horseradish sauce that also includes a couple of halved tomatoes that broil along side the steak. Both were delicious as was the sauce.

For my starch I decided on lemony herbed potatoes from the roasting chapter. While these were good I thought they needed a bit more flavor, perhaps a bit more that a 1/2 teaspoon of the lemon pepper seasoning would have helped.

Finally for my vegetable I choose broccoli with jalapeño and garlic from the microwaving section. This one starts in the microwave and is finished in a fry pan. For me this was the star of the meal. It was delicious and packed with flavor from the garlic, jalapeno, a touch of cumin and lime juice.

Some other recipes I’m looking forward to making are Warm Cinnamon-Raisin Apples from the Stir-frying chapter, New Mexican Meat Loaf from the slow-cooking chapter, Spinach and Artichoke Dip from the blending chapter, Corn and Black Bean Salad from the grilling chapter, Eggs with Smoked Sausage, Spincah, and Tomatoes from the braising chapter, Steakhouse Stew from the stewing chapter, Citrus Tea Tilapia from the poaching chapter, and Cheddar Cheese Pub bread and Mediterranean Chicken with Mushrooms and Artichokes both from the baking chapter. I love that there are quiet a few fish recipes included in this book since I’m always looking for new ways to prepare healthy fish dishes.
